Gun Control

I saw an article today citing the number of tragic deaths to children caused by gunfire.  This news story was trying to make the case for gun control.  The two authors spent a lot of time and space detailing specific cases in which children were killed by guns.  And yet, according to the FBI’s most recent Uniform Crime Reports, 561 children age 12 and under were killed by firearms between 2006 and 2010.  That’s about 110 children a year.  According to the National Hwy Safety Ass. approximately 2,000 children die each year in car accidents.  Where is the outrage?  Where is the call to outlaw cars, or at least outlaw children riding in cars?  Where are the tragic stories detailing some specific cases to outrage the populace?  The answer is, there aren’t any.  Why?  Because the outrage is not really over children’s deaths.  The outrage is over a political cause to outlaw guns that the liberals just can’t seem to push down everyone’s throat.

Mayor Big Brain in Chicago

Well, it certainly didn’t take long after the Newton tragedy for Mayor Emanuel to start enlightening us with his wisdom.  He is now calling for tougher gun control.  Ok – a lot of people are calling for that.  I’m not necessarily opposed, depending on the controls.  But what really gets me is the fact that he wants to license them like cars.  He wants to charge an annual fee ( I can’t remember the amount he mentioned – somewhere between $45 and $65 dollars) to own a gun.  Really?  Is he going to get the criminals to register their guns and pay the fee?  Of course not.  So who is going to pay the fee?  The law abiding gun owners.  This kind of talk is what makes people join the NRA.

Television in the 21st century

I just saw a blurb on a news site that mentioned over 50% of people watching some form of pay tv now record their shows on a dvr.  I did not see what percentage of the total population that is, but it must be a fairly significant number.  At least significant enough to spend a little money and thought on making the experience better.  I am one of those people who watches shows through a dvr so I can skip commercials.  I know, I know, the television people hate me.  But hey, I PAY to watch tv.  Now they want me to watch commercials?  Anyway, I can’t tell you how many times I have set my dvr to record a show only to find it missed either all, or most of the show because something delayed the start of my show.  It may be asking a lot, but can’t they encode the name of the show at the start and end of the broadcast?  Or maybe, if a show is scheduled to start at 8:00 but is delayed, then at 8:00 on that channel, encode a non-visible message that only a dvr would understand stating the new delayed start time of the show.  That way, dvrs could be programmed to watch for these hidden signals and begin and end when the show starts and stops; not at some mythical time that the show is SUPPOSED to start.  I can’t be the only one who thought of this.  If I am, please note the date and time of this message so I can collect some money when someone steals my idea.  Come on now, if they can figure out how to copy files between phones by tapping them together, then this should be a piece of cake.

Drivers licenses for all my illegal friends

Illinois politicians must have a corner on the stupid market.  Now they want to allow all illegal immigrants to get drivers licenses.  Why?  Because they (the immigrants) want to “normalize”.  If they had a license, they could buy car insurance and everyone would benefit!  And why would they buy car insurance?  Because they want to “normalize”.  You know, like learn to speak English.  That’s why we have so many signs and telephone recordings in Spanish; because the immigrants want to “normalize”.  They would leap at the chance to pay money for car insurance, which they currently don’t have.  Wait, isn’t it ILLEGAL in Illinois to drive without insurance?  Oh, I forgot, they are already ILLEGAL just by being here.  So I’m sure they will just rush out and buy car insurance  because they want to do the right thing.  Adios for now.
